I want to lean more into fitness this year. Hence the (potentially) embarrassing and ridiculous video, in which I:
Do 40 standard pushups
Do 1.5 minutes of plank
Almost succeed at doing a 2 minute wall squat (watch til the end for the pain!)
Why am I doing this? And do you want to join me?
I’m not a fitness bro, and I’m no personal trainer. But I have a body, and guess what? It sits way too much at a desk, creating inputs in digital spaces.
No matter what you think about AI, one thing we all know is that it can’t do the fitness for you!
My daily fitness challenge is not a resolution I’m undertaking, so much as it as it is a system or habit that I want to put into place. Think James Clear, Scott Adams, Dr. Caroline Leaf: people who talk convincingly about shaping behaviour through setting up systems that are easy to incorporate into the life you’re always living. Habit-shaping is the key.
I did that last year with my writing.
In 2025, I made a commitment to wake up early everyday for a quiet time, to walk, and to write. I didn’t have to do it but I wanted to. For myself, to see what would emerge, to create. It was a year of my highest creative output to date. I created more than 150 pieces of original content. Simply by setting up a system conducive to my life.
And that got me thinking about a goal and a system for fitness this year.
Regular, daily fitness hits
As a dad with a busy life, a busy career, and a busy creative schedule, I find it hard to get to the gym.
I walk 10k steps a day (thanks to my early morning routine), but because I can’t get to the gym easily based on my family and work schedule, weights and anything other than the walking falls to the wayside.
But I, like you, can actually take 10 minutes to get off my butt, move away from the computer, and do a sit up or two.
So, that’s what I’m doing here. I recorded it to see if it will help motivate anyone else. I’m toying with the idea of making this a regular livestream so that I force myself to be accountable to do it. But, whether it takes place on camera or not, at a minimum, I want to push myself to daily activity that moves me away from my office chair and my computer screen.
Let me know what you think. Want to join me?
Post script.
Part of me doubts that I even could pull this off. But then I remember the habit I instilled last year. The one in which I stopped eating the equivalent of a Big Mac every night before I went to bed, and started to track my macros. (@hile I didn’t do it perfectly, I did it consistently, and it was a huge boon).
I captured that journey here (and it makes me believe this 10 minute fitness thing is possible):
Repeat after me: "I will stop eating like I'm still in high school."
Happy New Year! I’m so grateful for my readers and wish you and yours the absolute best in 2025. May your goals be grand, your steps sure, and may your heart be full this year.
We’ll see where this all goes.
Welcome to 2026!
