Bible Verses for today’s reading
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid”
(John 14:26-27, NIV).
The comforting words of Jesus in John 14 set our hearts at peace, don’t they?
Jesus shared these words with the disciples after days of intense ministry, and at the end of His earthly ministry, just before He went to the cross. There were reasons the disciples would be troubled, their best friend and Savior was about to die. What would they do without Him?
Who could they ask for advice on life, ministry, the things of God? For just over three sweet years they had the Rabbi, but soon He’d be gone.
A lot of us can relate. We live in a time of trouble where people don’t have peace of mind and have many questions. If you’re a teen, young adult or a parent of one, then you’re very aware that so many young people are turning to artificial intelligence for answers, to check with AI and an algorithm if the things they experience are “normal”.
A recent study shows that teens in the USA ask AI chatbots for info and advice more than they pray and ask direction from God. While it may not be an “apples to apples” comparison (for instance, it makes sense to ask ChatGPT how long to boil an egg as opposed to asking Heaven for breakfast advice), but that’s an alarming stat.
The study also shows that twenty percent of US teens are engaging algorithms without ceasing, spending almost all their waking hours on some form of social media or engaging with AI.
Why does it matter that the Holy Spirit is our Advocate?
The word “Advocate” that Jesus uses to describe the Holy Spirit in the passage from John’s gospel in Greek is paráklētos (from pará, which means”close-beside” and kaléō, to “make a call”).
Jesus is saying that the Holy Spirit is like a legal advocate who makes the right judgment call for us because He is close enough to the situation. He knows us in and out. He always knows what to do.
Artificial Intelligence doesn’t know us like the Holy Spirit does, and it never will. AI tells us what we want to hear based on information it pulls from the human-built data centres. The Holy Spirit “searches all things, even the deep things of God” (1 Corinthians 2:10, NIV).
We all get afraid that we don’t measure up, we all face challenges and need wisdom, counsel, and advice. The Holy Spirit knows us and can bring us the truth about God and ourselves.
Reflection
Take a moment today to bring a trouble or a concern to God. Invite the Holy Spirit into the situation to search you and bring you wisdom, revelation, and help as your Advocate.
