3 Things this week and the poem When is a prayer
Thanks for spending some of your weekend with Things I Wrote Down. We had a full week in our home with the return to school.
We’re grateful for a good school near our home. It’s fun to see parents and kids on the first day with the whole year before them, hoisting backpacks the size of kindergarteners.
So much learning, all the time, in this life! Whether your little ones are back to school or you’re just slowing down as you pass through school zones, I hope your September is off to a great start.
Now here are three interesting places I went online this week, and the poem When is a prayer.
1. Praying with Coldplay
It's been out for a few weeks, but this weekend was the first time I heard Coldplay’s new single We Pray.
Have you heard it yet? It’s pretty catchy and inspiring.
On writing the song, the band’s frontman Chris Martin had this to day (to Audacy):
“In the middle of the night, I woke up and the song was in my head, and I don't know where it came from…. I've been thinking a lot about all of these conflicts and people that hate each other. We're all praying for the same things, and we’d probably all get along if you just sat down long enough.”
More of this, music industry, please.
2. Ninja in the kitchen
Anyone else use an air fryer more than they ever thought possible? I use ours all the time and love it. So it was time to up my game.
Canadian Tire is having a big sale, and while I rarely set foot in the store, I was drawn by the crazy deals on Ninjas. (We decided to consolidate our kitchen appliances into two units, saving counter space and dollar bills (we're talking 50% off, people).
And now I no longer have to stare at or search the cupboards for all this:
I must say, I was impressed by Canadian Tire’s fancy, hi-tech in-store pick up. Automated, streamlined, easy.
3. Swimming Daisy
Need a feel-good film?
We watched Young Woman and the Sea, the story of Trudy Ederle who in 1926 became the first woman to swim across the English Channel. The film stars Daisy Ridley who is excellent in the role of the woman who became the most famous athlete in the world.
When Ederle returned to New York City, it was to a hero’s welcome. The ticker tape parade to celebrate her was the biggest gathering of people on streets to this day. Millions, including Babe Ruth and the Yankees celebrated her achievement.
It’s a story I’d never heard that is a truly inspiring. As is the story of her contribution to sport and deaf athletes after her epic feat.
A poem
If big global brands are platforming prayer, highlighting the natural outpouring of the human heart, then obscure indie writers ought to do it too, amiright?
Here’s a stream of consciousness poem about prayer that I wrote awhile back about the thoughts under thoughts where prayers emerge. I hope you enjoy it.
