3️⃣ Did Netflix just save or end cinema?; An Advent story that pre-dates Christ; Shall we make some cornbread?
Three things 🔗 roundup
Thanks for spending some time this weekend with Things I Wrote Down.
Here are three things that stood out this week and an Advent outtake.
Netflix, keep the movies in the theatre!
There was a lot of chat online about the massive bid by Netflix to acquire Warner Bros., in a deal worth over $80 Billion. Yes, billion. Now we know what they’re doing with your monthly subscription fee.
The online streamer that started its global dominance as a DVD mail-out service (remember those days?) is set to acquire one of the greatest film libraries of all time. But people are worried, especially filmmakers.
The CEO of Netflix has indicated the market just wants to watch films at home on the couch, in pyjamas.
I’m hoping that’s not true. Not everything that streams is worthy of the big screen. But I think movies were made to watch in a theatre, and I, for one, still want to go.
What was the last film you saw in the theatre?
2nd Week of Advent
Have you lit a candle with family or friends yet?
Much of my year is a gear up to this moment. Especially in the summer months, I’m usually working on Advent content.
Over at Unveil, our free Advent Plans on YouVersion are starting to really take off. We have people in 85 countries currently subscribed to our Christmas plans. How amazing that the reality of Christmas brings people together!
This week, I shared another excerpt from a popular plan right here on TIWD. It looks at Esther. Her story of risk, to approach the king, gives us a glimpse of the unthinkably dangerous and familiar thing Christians do every day, all over the world. Esther’s story reawakens an ancient memory for awe within me. I hope it loosens some wonder in you, too.
Cornbread goals
My video about making bread pudding has got a lot of views (for me) on IG. Kind of helps to have a Food Network star reshare it! I created the post because I’m fully bought in to the food series at Compassion International with Aarti Sequeira, which is all about encouraging fellowship and hospitality in these times.
Food and kindness open doors to meaningful conversation and this series is way to encourage connection. It’s part of the Unto Jesus campaign, which is all about inviting people to show love and compassion in everyday ways: at home, in your community and around the world. So I thought I better give the first recipe a try, myself!
Confession: I have never made bread pudding before (and don’t really eat it). But I got to taste it on set, and loved it.
How did it turn out? Pretty great. If you need some food ideas for the holidays, then this series and these dishes are perfect for you. They’re all delicious and they’re great conversation starters.
This weekend I hope to make the Bolivian cornbread. Wish me luck!
