As a child in the home of four energetic boys who’d fight over who got to light the Advent candle and who got to snuff it out (every single time!), there was always noise, competition, and negotiation when we did the Advent wreath.

Despite the ruckus, the practice of sitting together to read and reflect on what it meant that Jesus came into the world, left a deep impact on my young heart.

That’s my hope with this book. To offer my family and yours content that will help nurture a sense of wonder in hearts and in homes. Especially right now.

There’s so much darkness in the world. The practice of gathering together, lighting a candle in the dimmed-out living room or around the table, is a simple and beautiful act of faith, a declaration that darkness doesn’t win and that light overcomes it.

The selection of poems and stories in Gather for Advent helps to set up the moment when we light the candle and reflect on what it means that Christ came to us—in our weakness and pain, in our sin and shame—to do something, once for all, about the mess humanity made.

I wrote the stories to become unfamiliar again with the story of Christmas we all think we know so well. I believe the humor, surprise, and the questions the characters in the stories ask, will bring Christmas alive in your heart and your home in new and meaningful ways.

Gather for Advent will be a treasured Advent book for your family this year and in years to come.

The book will be available in print and as an ebook on October 14, the day after Canadian Thanksgiving.
