Costco's pumpkin pie time lapse; Calling vs. Assignment; Dispatches from the set of DANIEL
3 Things this week and a poem
Thanks for spending some time this weekend with Things I Wrote Down.
It’s the Thanksgiving long weekend in Canada. The stretch pants are out, families and friends are gathering to feast, the Jays are still in the playoffs, and the weather is glorious (at least it is here in south western Ontario).
Wherever you are in the world, I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Our pastor shared that in the original language, the word “eucharist” means to give thanks. What a beautiful thing! I want to experience that from-the-heart kind of thankfulness for all God’s goodness this weekend and in the future.
Here are three things that stood out to me on the web this week, with a poem.
Costco’s pumpkin pie time lapse
My mom passed on her love of pumpkin pie with a dollop of whip cream to me. She’s in town to celebrate this Thanksgiving. We haven’t had our official dinner yet (though we’ve had a variety of feasts), but the pie is already gone. I need to hit up a grocery store before everything closes for holiday Monday.
This year I bought my pumpkin pie from another outlet, but it was fun to see a time lapse of Costco’s famous (and massive!) pumpkin pies fly off the shelves. Imagine selling something that moves so quickly, what an entrepreneur’s dream!
If you’re a pumpkin pie eater, I’d love to know how you source your pies.
Calling vs. Assignment
I’ve shared before about my work on Compassion International’s Unto Jesus campaign. The Nuance podcast this week received a nomination for Best Video Podcast at the ICVM Crown Awards, which was pretty cool to hear!
This week, we released a conversation between podcaster Heather MacFadyen and Shaun Groves about parenting and living a life of faith. Heather shared a powerful insight that has really impacted me.
She talked about the difference between Calling and an Assignment. I found the distinction to be so life-giving and encouraging. And it helped make sense of what can often feel like a tension, for me.
If you’ve ever wrestled with what you’re “called” to as a Christian or as a creative, this part of the conversation might bring you a lot of freedom and hope, as it did for me.
Dispatches from the set of DANIEL
Filmmaking is a marathon, not a sprint. And Matt and Daniel just passed the halfway mark of the month-plus of production. They’re total champs.
It’s been such a joy to teleport through modern tech onto the set most days as they are about to roll camera. (For those of you who thought Newfoundland’s time zone hard to account for, try India’s. It’s 12.5 hours ahead of my time zone. The math on that is always confusing!)
This week we had some fun moments together as the production travelled from an ancient fort to ancient ruins.

Poem
This poem, one I wrote back before I would think of myself as a writer of any kind, captures a sense of thankfulness and wonder. And it feels like a good poem to return to at Thanksgiving. I hope you enjoy it.
Happy Thanksgiving, friends!
Our homemade pumpkin pie is gluten free and vegan, made with cashew cream and topped with coconut cream, but it's still delicious. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you and thank you for the beauty and joy you share with us.
