A RingConn to rule them; Our unicorn era; Brazil on the brink
3 Things this week and the poem What is Truth?
The birthdays have come and gone. Sophie and I have back-to-back celebrations, which is a sweet end to the summer. We went out for a sit-down dinner as a family (a rarity, except for when we tithe at Chik-fil-a 😂).
It was a wonderful experience. If food prices weren't so high I'd do it more often. How special to just sit around a table and enjoy people you love, with good food and fellowship.
Thanks for spending some of your weekend with Things I Wrote Down.
1. One RingConn to rule them
I’d never heard of this brand, but am a new fan! The RingConn is a subscription-free fitness ring that tracks all your metrics, without all the distractions and notifications of a smart watch.
A few loved ones pooled some money for my birthday and as I researched rings, I’vebet my birthday money that rhe RingConn 2 rules them all.
I miss wearing my nice watches out and about. The ring solves my desire to track all the health things while sporting some wrist bling.
Will accept transfers or sponsorship deals for new watches 😂⌚.
2. It's our Unicorn era
Goodness me. We have a five year old. And she's living her best life, which, verifiably, is the unicorn era.
Being a father is a great blessing and I am thankful for this season. (Sometimes I have to remind myself of that 👀, that the grumpy dad is just a persona).
Here's to many more years and many more memories (and as many unicorns as one little girl can handle).
3. Brazil on the brink
Speaking of eras, the days of Big Tech and Bigger Gov are making life interesting, aren't they?
Are you following what's happening in Brazil? I'm starting to. It looks pretty scary as the state shuts down dissent and censors voices, especially on the internet.
I did a quick search on Google then on X to see what's being said. Interesting results! All the major outlets report a personal feud between a Brazilian judge and an eccentric billionaire. X describes it as a tyranny vs. freedom. Could the truth be somewhere between?
A poem
It's easy to get caught up in the times and obsess over political realities. This reminded me of a poem I wrote about how the greatest truth can stand right in front of us and so easily go unnoticed.
It’s from my book of poems and prose The Many Dreams of Joseph. I hope you enjoy it.
Joseph of Arimathea: What is Truth
later, he would read the words
touch them with his own fingers
touch the parchment ink
like he would touch his wife
softly, with reverence
longing in his body
hold the writing carefully
aware of the power
in his hand
to destroy it
the way he was aware
with one careless or intentional
movement
he might have
snapped his daughter’s neck
when she was young
excited with guilt by the
thought of it
those words somehow
beautiful to him
no longer holding him in the shadow
of that night
the honest syntax
removing the residue left
by the hasty language of grief
each time he read the words
touched the familiar characters
written by the hand of his dear friend
that much closer to realizing
the Judean governor’s
tone of wondering
the tone of
his own heart
the night his soul broke
under
the tension of the same question:
“what is truth”
three words
a feather falling
the sound of water
poured over hands
three words
the weight of stone
against a
tomb
